India International Centre, New Delhi, August 2022:: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released a consultation paper that considered the issues of concentration in media ownership. Indian media is going through churn with the entry of digital content creators, unprecedented rates of piracy, and questions regarding the relevance of legacy business models. On the one hand, the efficiencies from market consolidation can drive increased production of content and help legacy media industries remain relevant in the face of increased economic constraints. However, larger firms may engage in practices that may have adverse effects on coemption. In this context, the Esya Centre and the Internet Internet Freedom Foundation organized a two-hour roundtable to discuss competition in media markets.
